1.4  Contractions with Be


           EXAMPLES                                       EXPLANATION
           I am            I’m in Minneapolis.           We can make a contraction with a subject pronoun + am, is,
           You are         You’re a student.             or are. We put an apostrophe (’) in place of the missing letter.
           She is          She’s a young teacher.
           He is           He’s 74 years old.
           It is           It’s cold in winter.
           We are          We’re busy.
           They are        They’re big.
           Rolando is      Rolando’s from Guatemala.     We can make a contraction with most nouns + is.
           Guatemala is    Guatemala’s in Central America.
           Here is         Here’s a class schedule.      We can make a contraction with here is.
           My class is big.                              We don’t make a contraction with is if the subject noun ends
           Belize is in Central America.                 in s, se, z, ze, ge, ce, sh, ch, or x.
           English is the language of the United States.
           College is different here.
           Textbooks are expensive.                      We don’t make a contraction with a plural noun and are.
           The classrooms are big.



            GRAMMAR IN USE

            We usually use contractions when we speak. The full form sounds very formal.
                It’s a beautiful day.
            We sometimes use contractions in informal writing like email.
                I’m happy about my grade.


           EXERCISE 8  Complete the conversation between a new student (A) and a teacher (B). Use contractions
           with a form of be.

            A:  I ’m              late.
